DIN 17100 ST44-3 steels are suitable for hot and cold forming, i. e. they must be neither cold-short nor red-short. In the bending test DIN 17100 ST44-3 much be capable of being bent for 180° round the mandrel diameters stated without showing any cracks on the side in tension.

DIN 17100 ST44-3 Flats up to 20 mm thickness from the steels with the code letter Q are supplied with special suitability for cold bending, folding, cold flanging or cold beading with internal bending radii in accordance. Flats with rolled-in pattern cannot be supplied in Q grades.

Strip from DIN 17100 ST44-3 steels with the code letter K is delivered in thicknesses up to 8 mm with suitability for the manufacture of cold rolled sections on rolled section machines (see DIN 59413) and in thicknesses up to 12.5 mm with suitability for the manufacture of cold forming hollow sections (see DIN 59411). The suitability applies to the bending radii-stipulated in DIN 59411 & DIN 59413. For strip thickness over 8 mm or 12.5 mm the internal bending radii according to Table 5 apply of DIN 17100.
