ASTM A633/A633M is particularly suitable for use at temperatures of -50 degrees Fahrenheit (-45°C) and above, where superior notch toughness compared to equivalent strength original rolled materials is required.
ASTM A633/A633M specifications cover four grades: A, C, D, and E. Grade A has a minimum yield strength of 42 ksi (290 MPa). Grades C and D have a minimum yield strength of 50 ksi [345 MPa].
When welding steel, welding processes appropriate to the steel grade and intended use or service are typically employed.
ASTM A633/A633M Heat Treatment: ASTM A633/A633M materials shall be normalized by heating to an appropriate temperature to produce an austenitic structure, but not exceeding 1700 degrees Fahrenheit [925°C], holding for a sufficient time to allow the material to heat uniformly throughout, and then cooling in air.
For Grade E materials exceeding 3 inches [75 mm] in thickness, double normalization shall be performed.
